Phillip Burns as president of the prestigious Southern Surgical Association (SSA). Arnold by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). Phillip Burns, chairman of the Department of Surgery, University of Tennessee, and chairman of the board of University Surgical Associates, has been named president of the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC) – the largest regional general surgical society in the United States. Organized in 1930, the SESC is an association of more than 3,300 surgeons in the states of Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Puerto Rico was added in 1965. Dr. Burns, who served the SESC as its secretary-director from 1993-2002, becomes the society’s 76th president.
