Dr. Joe Cofer Elected to the American Board of Surgery

Cofer, MD, was honored as its Distinguished Service Award winner during MedTenn 2007, the TMA’s 172nd Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 28, at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel. R. Phillip Burns Named President of the Southern Surgical Association
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Chattanooga, TN (Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006) – University Surgical Associates (USA) and the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine announced today the appointment of Dr. R. Phillip Burns as president of the prestigious Southern Surgical Association (SSA).  Dr. Burns, who was also named president of the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC) earlier this year – the largest regional general surgical society in the U.S. – becomes the first surgeon since 1944 (Dr. Alton Ochsner) to serve as president of both groups simultaneously, and the only Chattanooga surgeon ever to serve the SSA as its president.

Myers to its vascular staff, and to its faculty affiliation with the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine.  Dr. Myers, a recognized national leader in the field of vascular surgery and research with advanced training in endovascular surgery, becomes USA’s 32nd general and specialty surgeon, and seventh vascular surgeon. University Surgical Associates Appoints Craig D. Sarine as Administrator
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Chattanooga, Tenn. (Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006) – University Surgical Associates (USA), the largest surgical specialty practice in the region, announced today the appointment of Craig D. Sarine as practice administrator.  Mr. Sarine becomes the group’s fourth administrator since its inception in 1976, replacing Phil Honey who announced his retirement in January after serving nearly 11 years in the position.  The announcement was made by USA Managing Partner Dr. Michael S. Dr. Coleman L. Arnold Earns Third Recertification by The American Board of Surgery
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Chattanooga, Tenn. (Monday, May 8, 2006) – University Surgical Associates (USA) announced today the recertification of Dr. Coleman L. Arnold by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).  Dr. Arnold, chief of surgery at Memorial Hospital and a USA general surgeon, has earned his third certification by ABS, becoming one of only 171 surgeons to recertify three times during their

Dr. R. Phillip Burns Named President of the Southeastern Surgical Congress
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Chattanooga, Tenn. (Friday, March 3, 2006) – Dr. R. Phillip Burns, chairman of the Department of Surgery, University of Tennessee, and chairman of the board of University Surgical Associates, has been named president of the Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC) – the largest regional general surgical society in the United States.  Organized in 1930, the SESC is an association of more than 3,300 surgeons in the states of Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  Puerto Rico was added in 1965.  Dr. Burns, who served the SESC as its secretary-director from 1993-2002, becomes the society’s 76th president.

University Surgical Associates Announces Opening of New Surgical Specialties Building
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Chattanooga, Tenn. (Jan. 16, 2006) – In a move to better serve its growing vascular patient base, University Surgical Associates’ (USA) Managing Partner Dr. Michael S. Greer today announced the opening of the organization’s new Surgical Specialties Building located at 2108 E. Third Street in Chattanooga.  The facility is conveniently located between Memorial and Parkridge Hospitals, and approximately two miles east of Erlanger Medical Center.  USA’s vascular surgeons, Vascular Diagnostic Services (VDS) group, and Vascular Special Procedures (VSP) group will occupy the first two floors of the building, which equates to nearly 23,000 square feet of office space.
